Time Warner Cable Planning on Releasing a Network Enabled TV Set-Top Box for Internet TV Access

time_warnerAccording to Time Warner Cable’s Chief Executive, Glen Britt, speaking at the Sanford C. Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in New York, the company is planning on releasing a network enabled TV set-top box, along with a specialized wireless cable modem, that will give people access to “Internet TV.” No specific details on how the set-top/modem combo will accomplish this, or who the partner providers may be, but subscribers can look forward to getting previously untapped content directly to their TV without the need of a PC and be able to easily network their other Internet enabled devices. Britt suggests that it will probably take two years to popularize the tech to his mainstream consumer base...

Music on Blu-ray

Music on Blu-rayMusic on Blu-ray

The world’s first ever music Blu-ray release is Norwegian.

Yesterday the Norwegian record label 2L released the word’s first ever Blu-Ray record.
“Divertimenti” is a milestone in many ways. It is the label’s 50th record release and it marks the twentieth anniversary of the Trondheim soloist whose concert in Selbu Church is captured on “Divertimenti.” A label always at the forefront technologically, 2L (Linberg Lyd) found the occasion right to make “Divertimenti” a milestone also in format.

The Blu-ray technology makes use of five separate sound tracks, which entails a complex recording and mixing process conditioned by very sophisticated equipment. 2L has cooperated with equipment manufacturers and the record now available is the fruit of a combined effort opening up new vistas of sound rendition. The sound is, as with Blu-ray images, like nothing you’ve heard before. Each instrument is clearly positioned, creating a multidimensional listening experience of utmost clarity. But since very few so far have the proper home equipment to actually play Blu-ray discs, the release also includes a SACD disc, playable on all standard CD players and computers.

Trondheimsolistene –the Trondheim soloists- is one of Norway’s finest orchestras. Under the leadership of Øyvind Gimse they have developed into an ensemble of international renown, and undertaken successful tours all over Europe, in America, Japan and Brazil.

Divertimento (of which divertimenti is the plural) is a musical style characterised by light and playful pieces. The effortless and elegant nature of the style has been defining for chamber music as we know it today.

The repertoire on “Divertimenti” is as follows:

Bejamnin Britten: Simple Symphony
Grazyna Bacewicz: Concerto for string orchestra
Terje Bjørklund: Carmina
Béla Bartók: Divertimento for strings...

TiVo planning whole-home DVR

TiVo planning whole-home DVR

TiVo planning whole-home DVR

TiVo is prepping a digital video recorder that would serve as a hub for an entire house, company chief Tom Rogers confirms at the D6 Conference. He notes that current TiVos are essentially limited and can't record or offer content to more than one TV set in the home; the Wi-Fi adapter that lets the TiVo work remotely is only a part solution to the problem, Rogers says. Instead, TiVo is working to produce a version of its self-titled hubs that could give "whole-home" access, though the executive doesn't provide more details.

The mention both hints at a potential advantage for TiVo over rival DVR makers, which are also usually tied to single TVs, and also gives the company greater reach as a digital media provider. Subscribers with a broadband Internet connection have access to podcasts and other Internet video features directly through a single TiVo, including Amazon Unbox movies and upcoming YouTube access...

D-Link Introduces Ethernet-to-Coax Kit for Extending the Home Network Using Existing TV Cabling in the Home

Easy-to-Use Adapter Kit Enables Fast Transfers of HD Video, Music, Gaming; Quick Solution for Connecting Devices in Multiple Rooms

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA--(Marketwire - May 28, 2008) - D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumer and business, today introduced an easy-to-use Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit that taps into existing coaxial wiring throughout the home, delivering fast and stable connections for extending a network to devices at the entertainment system and to multiple rooms without interrupting cable service.

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit (DXN-221) is ideally suited for adding bandwidth-demanding applications such as high-definition (HD) media streaming, music sharing and online multi-player gaming to the home network. The DXN-221 comes with two adapters, each of which includes an Ethernet port as well as a Coaxial F-type connector for bridging the two adapters together. The adapters may also be purchased individually (DXN-220).

Users can easily connect the D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter to their existing router and then to an available coaxial outlet in the home, enabling network and Internet access to multiple rooms. A second adapter is added in another room to connect Ethernet-enabled devices like PCs and media players. The DXN-221 may be used in rooms with multiple devices by connecting a switch to the adapter to connect additional devices.

In a typical scenario, a single adapter comes from the home network router via an Ethernet cable and then connects to a nearby coaxial cable. The second adapter can then be placed anywhere in the home where there is another coaxial cable which can then plug into an Ethernet-ready device or network switch for connecting multiple devices. The technology also works as a point-to-multipoint network which enables placing multiple adapters throughout the home for connections in any room with a coaxial outlet.

The Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit is an ideal solution for home networking requiring no new in-home wiring. Pairing the device with existing coaxial cabling in the home can extend the network to the home entertainment center where more devices are now network-capable such as gaming consoles, digital video recorders (DVR), and media players.

"With simplified user setup, coaxial networking support, the ability to coexist with other coaxial devices, and fast networking speeds, our Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit delivers a simplified networking solution that makes it easy for consumers to enjoy the benefits of a digital home designed for high-definition media streaming, online gaming and other emerging applications," said AJ Wang, chief technical officer for D-Link "The technology is fast and a natural complement to our popular networking solutions for moving data into areas of a home where it may be difficult to run a cable or achieve a strong Wi-Fi signal."

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit is Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) certified and therefore designed to coexist with other technologies already being distributed in the home. MoCA certified products are able to seamlessly deliver HDTV and DVD quality digital entertainment and high-speed data without interference or latency. The device operates in the 800-1500MHz range, so there is no interference with other products such as cable TV transmissions.

Price and Availability

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit DXN-221 will be available in Q3, 2008 from D-Link's network of retail outlets and will be available from D-Link's extensive network of e-tail shops with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $199.99. Individual adapters (DXN-220) are available with a MSRP of $109.99.

iPod speaker that doubles as pool toy

iPod speaker that doubles as pool toy

iPod speaker that doubles as pool toy

High-quality audio may be going the way of the endangered Fat Three-Ridge Mussel, but this clam-like floating speaker at least promises to revive any poolside party should conversation begin to dwindle.

The Weatherproof Submersible Wireless Speaker from Grace Audio is...exactly that. The speaker doesn't just stand up to a few splashes of water, you can actually toss it in the pool in case your backyard speakers aren't loud enough or close enough for you.

For added fun, and if you want to test its weatherproofing limits, the speaker promises to remain functional up to 9 feet under water for up to a half hour. (Aside: what would that even sound like?)

It connects wirelessly to a music source, up to 150 feet away, and the battery is good for six hours. Neiman Marcus is selling the base station and speaker for $150, with each additional speaker selling for $100. (You can connect up to 10 additional speakers.)...

The Ultimate Remote Arrives

The Ultimate Remote Arrives

The Ultimate Remote Arrives

Looking for an alternative to the Harmony? It now exists. As I was leaving the floor at the Cable Show, I got the lowdown on the new Ultimate Remote from tvCompass. In a quick demo I was particularly impressed with the TV Guide EPG rendering - not an easy thing to get right on such a small screen. Even more important, however: the remote is WiFi-enabled, meaning plenty of extras like messaging and content applications. It’s launching with ESPN and associated sports content, but the partnership opportunities are really limitless. Operators are apparently looking at the tvCompass product, too. You can pre-order the ESPN version on Amazon. Hefty price tag at $299.99, but I bet there’ll be quite a few willing to shell it out.

Sony will distribute 'live' shows digitally to movie theaters

Sony will distribute \\\'live\\\' shows digitally to movie theatersSony will distribute 'live' shows digitally to movie theaters

LOS ANGELES — Sony Pictures studio unveiled plans Wednesday for a new digital cinema unit to bring filmed presentations of Broadway shows, rock concerts and sports events to specially equipped movie theaters nationwide.

The new venture, dubbed the Hot Ticket, will launch in August with a presentation of the final staging of the music and dance extravaganza Delirium from Cirque du Soleil, which closed its worldwide tour in London in April.

In September, the final performance in the 12-year Broadway run of the hit musical Rent will be presented.

"Our mandate will be to identify the one-of-a-kind, and sold-out events that people around the country most want to see ... and present them to audiences everywhere," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said in a statement.

Hot Ticket presentations will be shown in high-definition format for limited engagements only, starting out on roughly 400 to 500 screens in theaters across the country, with audiences paying roughly $20 a seat, Bruer said.

The new Sony business is capitalizing on a sweeping upgrade of movie houses being undertaken by major theater chains and studios to bring state-of-the-art digital projection technology to thousands more screens in the United States and Canada.

Besides lowering distribution costs for studios, digital technology is seen as paving the way for the introduction of more "alternative content" to theaters, helping exhibitors bolster sagging admissions, especially on weekdays.

Sony is hardly alone in bringing such non-movie entertainment to a theater near you, but it is believed to be the first major studio to create a separate unit devoted to such content.

"We're excited to be on the ground of floor of what is going to be a new business for movie theaters," Bruer told Reuters.

About 5,000 of nearly 39,000 U.S. cinema screens are already digitally equipped, and that number is expected to climb steadily, said John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

He called Sony's move a "confirmation that everyone in the movie industry envisions the cinema as a growing entertainment destination for a variety of products."

"It's significant that Sony recognizes the potential for alternative content in cinemas by creating a separate unit," he said.

The Sony initiative builds on a trend that has been evolving in the movie industry for some time.

Concert films have long been popular offerings at the multiplex, and the Walt Disney Co. scored a box-office bonanza with its recent 3-D release Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.

Landmark Theatres screened opera star Placido Domingo's 40th anniversary concert in 22 playhouses last month, and several theater chains have teamed up to show auto racing, soccer matches and even Tour de France competition.

National Amusements, the controlling shareholder in Viacom, has been screening high-def broadcasts of select Boston Red Sox baseball games in its Showcase Cinemas in New England since 2003...

Orbitsound T6 Sound System Produces Full Audio With a Hint of Steampunk

Orbitsound T6 Sound System Produces Full Audio With a Hint of Steampunk

Orbitsound T6 Sound System Produces Full Audio With a Hint of Steampunk

The new Orbitsound T6 iPod docking system is supposed to produce a fuller, warmer sound than regular speakers through a 'single point stereo' sound system (of a single, smallish speaker).

So this set could kill the two birds that have been bothering me lately, with a single stone: Looking for a deal for my latest speaker system, and placating the girlfriend's complaints about using up her apartment's increasingly smaller space as a gadget storage facility.

The Orbitsound T6 uses triode valve (or tube) amplifiers and (in combination with its patented AirSOUND technology) creates a balanced sound field throughout the room. This is a kind-of back to the future type of application for sound technology -- encoding regular left-and right stereo with spatial signal information, the direct signal is pushed out from the front firing driver and the spatial information from smaller side firing transducers. Then, both signals are supposed to combine in the air to create a single, full stereo sound.

According to the Wikis, the use of tubes for amplifying the power of sound signals for small frequency devices was mostly dropped in the early 70s or so, though they've continued to be an integral part of high-powered frequency technology, especially in the military.

Many current speaker systems use DSP processing, which is seen by sound purists as artificial, and only barely approximate to a 'full' sound.

Basically, this should mean that you can put the system anywhere you want in the room, and the sound reproduced will be good anywhere.

The Orbitsound T6 includes a 3.5 stereo input in the back, video output and will be available in June...
