Nintendo Wii Surpasses Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Sales (Update3)

data Nintendo Co. said U.S. retailers sold more than 666,000 of its Wii consoles last month, making the machine the overall leader among the new generation of video-game machines.

Consumers have purchased almost 10.9 million of the players since Wii was introduced in November 2006, passing the total rung up by Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, researcher NPD Group Inc. said today in an e-mailed statement.

Wii, designed for easy-to-play games and equipped with a motion-sensitive controller that can be swung like a racquet or sword, has gained popularity among people who don't play traditional shooting and racing games. Wii has outsold Xbox 360 and Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 in all but one month since it went on sale, according to NPD.

``Wii is bringing people of all ages into the video-game experience,'' Cammie Dunaway, head of marketing for Nintendo's U.S. unit, said in an interview.

In June, stores sold 405,500 PlayStation 3s and 219,800 Xbox 360s, Port Washington, New York-based NPD said in an e- mailed statement.

Total industry sales rose 53 percent to $1.69 billion in June from $1.1 billion a year earlier, NPD said. Consoles and portable players jumped 54 percent to $615.1 million from $399.2 million. Game sales increased 61 percent to $872.6 million from $542.2 million.

Year-to-Date

For the first six months of the year, game sales are up 49 percent to $4.3 billion from $2.89 billion a year earlier, while consoles and portables have gained 23 percent to $2.88 billion.

Total sales likely will reach a record $22 billion this year, NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement.

``Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots,'' made by Konami Corp. for Sony's PlayStation 3, was the top-selling single game with 774,600 copies purchased. The number doesn't include copies sold together with the console, NPD said.

Versions of ``Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure'' sold 1.1 million copies in multiple formats, NPD said.

Six of the 10 best-selling games in June were titles made for Nintendo, including ``Wii Fit,'' which ranked fourth, the company said. The exercise game is sold with a balance board for use in workouts and games that simulate skiing and soccer.

Upgrades

Wii, at $249, is the least-expensive of the newer consoles. Microsoft and Tokyo-based Sony both announced plans this week to increase the size of hard drives on their machines, without raising the price, to attract customers.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, tripled the storage capacity of a $349 version of the 360 to 60-gigabytes and Sony doubled the hard drive on its $399 PlayStation 3 to 80 gigabytes.

``Looking at historical data, hardware price reductions have been a good incentive for a broader consumer base to invest in a new-gen system, which encourages continued industry growth across all categories,'' Frazier said.

Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, has no plans to add a hard drive to the Wii, Dunaway said.

Microsoft gained 26 cents to $27.52 today in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. It has declined 23 percent this year. Sony's U.S.-listed shares gained 71 cents to $42.26 and are down 22 percent this year. Nintendo fell 600 yen to 55,800 yen in Osaka and is down 17 percent in 2008.

USB NES controller plus

nec-controller-romsUSB NES controllers are old school these days, but [Jay] put together a nice new take on the project. He shoehorned a USB interface adapter, USB hub and a USB memory stick to store his collection of NES roms and emulators right on the controller. He even dug up a black USB cable to keep the original look of the controller. Now he can just plug in and load his game selection directly from the controller.

New Wii Controllers May Have MotionPlus Inside

wiimotion2Wii MotionPlus -- the Wii Remote attachment revealed Eurogamer), Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi confirmed the one possibility under consideration is to update the Wii Remote to include the MotionPlus technology.

As to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built-in -- we're always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it," Eguchi said. "Unfortunately, I don't have a definite direction to give you today, but it's something we'll be looking at."

Sure, all of the people who already own a Wii (and in case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of them) will still have to buy the add-on for any games that support it, but at least building it into the controller would help Nintendo keep its user base from getting too splintered. But Eguchi said that the company is considering limiting MotionPlus support to a select number of games. "[It] might be good to keep it as an attachment we only use for certain software."

Eguchi also stated that he doesn't believe MotionPlus is in some way an acknowledgment that the original Wii Remote isn't satisfactory. "Of course, you always want more, and as we were working on [Wii Sports Resort], we thought it would be nice to have more than what we had," he said. "But we're not dissatisfied with [the original Wii Sports] at all. We're very happy with what we did."

Rock out Guitar Hero On Tour DS bundle spotted

Rock out Guitar Hero On Tour DS bundle spottedRock out Guitar Hero On Tour DS bundle spotted

Toys 'R' Us has given us the first look at a definite must-have for any on-the-go wannabe rock god. Priced at $179.99, the limited edition Nintendo DS Guitar Hero Bundle includes the game, Guitar Grip, and a swanky two-toned silver & black DS Lite with silkscreened Guitar Hero logo. (You know, in case the stylus strumming and shouts of "Star Power!" don't give away what game you're playing.)

The bundle goes on sale June 29, one week after the, er ... "light rock" version of Guitar Hero: On Tour. Given all the evidence, we're pretty much convinced Nintendo is going for some kind of record for "most bundles and color variations of a handheld gaming system ever."

Free Wi-Fi for DS no more at North American McDonald's now

Free Wi-Fi for DS no more at North American McDonald's now

Personally, we can't remember the last time we were in a McDonald's, so this news comes as, uh, well ... news to us. You see, the partnership between McDonald's and Wayport actually expired back in November of last year. Canadians are also up the same creek without a paddle, as the deal with Fatport also expired. This is not to say you can't still get online at McDonald's, it'll just take a bit more for you to get online with your DS.

Apparently, using the DS Opera Browser or a wi-fi dongle with a laptop will still allow you to get your DS online. But, as one might imagine, these alternatives aren't the best. Unless you go with the second choice, you won't even be able to enjoy a game online. Oh well, if it forces you to get wireless internet in your home, it can't be all that bad of a thing, right?...

Nintendo confirms injection of color for European DSes

For so long now, Europe has lived beneath a cloud, with a populace that is served by Smart Black, Crystal White, and Platinum Silver DSes. Where's the color, Nintendo? We know all about Noble Pink, but some of us are manly men, and it would hurt our fearful reputation to be seen with such a gentle shade of DS! Across the Atlantic, our North American friends have enjoyed those lovely two-tone models.

But no longer must our portable consoles lack vividity! Following much rumor and speculation, Nintendo has started e-distributing the advert you see to the right, featuring a rainbow of DSes (kind of an ugly rainbow, but a rainbow nonetheless). We've suspected this was real for a while, but it's nice to have some confirmation -- and some cheery color back in our lives.

In case you forgot, the Ice Blue, red, and green will all be here June 13th...

Nintendo Japan starts new wireless data service for the DS

Nintendo Japan starts new wireless data service for the DSNintendo Japan starts new wireless data service for the DS

Nintendo started testing a new wireless data distribution service using DS consoles today. The company partnered up with a subsidiary of Japanese telecommunications powerhouse NTT and McDonald’s Japan. The burger giant is obviously bullish about the possibilities the Japanese mobile market offers.

The experiment at a total of 21 McDonald’s stores (all of which are located in Tokyo) will be conducted through June 28th. DS users will be able to download information on sales campaigns and McDonald’s products. Nintendo said demo versions of games will also be available for download.

In cooperation with NTT, Nintendo also offers information for download on train transfers, restaurants, the weather and other news at 20 train stations on the Tsukuba Express line, which connects Akihabara to Tsukuba in Ibaraki prefecture.

DS owners can use the service also in the trains themselves. The trial run will end December 28th. The service is called “Wifine for DS” and features an exclusive web site (Japanese only).
